Stick™ rudiments

Greg Howard's book has perfect practice exercises. I've been working on a few of those and trying to alter them a bit for my own needs. Emmet Chapman's technique of using the second finger of the left hand as an anchor point for the root while the 3rd finger plays a 5th above and the 1st finger plays the octave above that (pinky plays the low 5th on the bottom string) gives a pattern of 2-3-1-3-2-4 (repeat ad nauseam). This seems terribly intuitive for me....so I've been working primarily on this technique. But Greg Howard's suggestions for finger independence make sense to me, too....

So I've been working on these rudiments recently

LH = 2-3-2-1-2-3-2-1
RH = 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2

Each of these are on the same pitch on separate strings. I'll use 12th fret notes on the RH & 5th or 7th fret notes in the left. This is actually harder for me that moving across the strings in the left-hand. In LH rudiments, I'll change it up a little to use:

LH = 2(root)-3(5th higher)-2(root)-1(root)

whilst keeping the RH fingerings the same. Another variation I've used is in the right-hand.

RH = 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 (as 16th's two frets higher) then 1-3-1-3-1-3-1-3 (as 16th's a minor 3rd (3 frets) higher) then 2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3 (as 16th's a minor second apart) then 1-3-1-3-1-3-1-3 a minor third apart. Fret-wise, that'd be 10-12-10-12 etc, then 10-13-10-13, etc., then 12-13-12-13, etc., then 1-3-1-3 again. I'll alter the LH rudiments as I do this, too.

It's enough to keep my busy! I know this would be a lot easier if I printed this in Finale and put it up here as a jpg....at some point, I do plan to do that....so check back if you're interested.
