Apokalupsis
Apokalupsis was the first piece in a "Biblical Trilogy" that I wrote for guitar duet.
...
I grew up playing guitar, but I never had the dedication to study "legit" (i.e., Classical) guitar. I'd always wanted to write for that instrument, though. I have a friend who I met in gard school at USC who was a very good legit-guitar player. He (Jeff Harris) and his partner, Alan Knight (go Saints!) have a duo they were trying to work up pieces for, so I wrote them three! They even recorded one of them for one of their CD's (which I would strongly recommend that you buy (and not just because one of my pieces is on it!)). This tune was written in 1997.

Apokalupsis, probably obviously, comes from the first word of the Book of Revelation.
As it does most people, I find that to be a fascinating book. For this piece, though, it was less about the apocalyptic nature of the book, but rather the revelatory nature of it. Apokalupsis means "revelation" - to lay bare. That's the spirit in which I conceived of this piece.

From a musical perspective, this is one of those pieces that looks very cool for the audience. I hope that it sounds good, too. But as much as anything, I wanted to give Alan and Jeff a piece that would LOOK flashy and hard to play without it actually being hard to play.

There are some interesting score indications. You can download the pdf file of the score here, if you like. I use the word numinous as an indication of how to play the piece in places. When my wife and I were on our honeymoon at Lake Louise (during the midst of the November beauty, mind you!), I felt this numinous-ness. We got in late that evening to Lake Louise from Banff. There is a gigantic mountain just across the lake from the hotel there. It was foggy and pitch black when we got in. Of course, we had seen the pictures of the mountain, so we knew it was there...but we couldn't see it at all that evening. We could FEEL it, though. That's the feeling I was hoping to put across in the music.
